Sariska Deploys Drones to Monitor Tiger Population and Illegal Activities in the Wildlife Reserve

Sariska Uses Drones for Tiger Safety

The Sariska Tiger Reserve is making a monumental conservation effort by using drones for the first time as part of their successful conservation program to monitor their expanding population of wild tigers, which has continued to grow to over 50 tigers. The Sariska’s administrative authority purchased two high-performance drones that will provide them with an effective means to monitor the tiger population, keep tigers from wandering outside of the reserve, and monitor for any illegal activities across the vast expanse of the reserve.

Chief Conservator of Forests (CF) and Field Director Sangram Singh Katiyar believes traditional methods of monitoring, manually patrolling the areas and using radio collars are insufficient because of the rapidly growing population of large cats and the number of younger tigers that have left their existing ranges. This new drone system will greatly improve tiger monitoring capabilities, increase the efficiency of responding to emergencies, and aid in protecting tigers from threats posed by poaching, illegal logging, and cattle grazing.

Why We Need Drone Monitoring?

Tiger populations in Sariska keep increasing. There are now numerous cubs that have left their mothers and have dispersed outwards. This means more and more tigers are leaving Sariska and creating new make-up groups in other areas away from the Park.

How Drones Will Help Provide Improved Protection?
  • According to the administration, drone technology will aid in monitoring tigers in wide-open spaces, on mountainous terrain, on farms and in villages in real time.
  • Surveillance of large forest areas and unapproachable ravines where physical tracking is difficult.
  • Investigating illegal activities such as logging, livestock grazing, and poaching.
  • Observing and following water sources during summer months.
  • Quick assessments of wildfires, using live-stream high-definition video feed.
  • These changes in technology will represent a huge advancement for wildlife conservation in Rajasthan and make Sariska one of the first parks to implement modern conservation methods.
Plans for Future Implementation of AI Technology in Wildlife Monitoring

In the near future, Sariska Tiger Reserve will implement AI-based monitoring technologies, such as:

  • AI Camera System
  • Sensor Systems
  • Automatic Notification and Alert Systems

At present, officials are working on finalizing the budget and creating the blueprint for the installable technologies. Officials have stated that technological advancement is absolutely necessary for continued conservation of Sariska, following the complete poaching wipeout of the reserve in 2005 and the subsequent amazing recovery of over fifty tigers.

A Modern Way to Conserve the Majestic Cats!

Now is a pivotal time for conservation efforts at Sariska Tiger Reserve because of an increase in tiger populations. The introduction of drone technology will allow the administration to monitor their growing populations in a timely and effective manner. In conjunction with new AI-based conservation tools, the administration hopes to develop a dependable and future-proofed conservation management system. With these new technologically based approaches to tiger conservation, the Sariska administration's tiger conservation strategy is being formed with an emphasis on utilizing the best available technology to protect and expand tiger populations while reducing illegal poaching and human-tiger conflict.
